Document Destruction, Electronics Recycling Event Saturday

Bring your documents and electronics to the Niles Public Services Department between 9 a.m. and noon.

Niles residents will have an opportunity to safely dispose of documents with confidential information Saturday. Old computers and other electronics will also be collected for recycling at the event.

The Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County is sponsoring the document destruction and electronics recycling event, which will take place 9 a.m. to noon at the Niles Public Services Department, 6849 Touhy Ave, according to a press release.

There is no cost, but the event is only for residents that live in SWANCC member communities, and IDs will be checked to verify residency. Materials from businesses, institutions and schools will not be accepted.

Documents including medical records, bank statements, personal files, retired tax forms and others will be shredded by Accurate Document Destruction, a division of Groot Industries, according to the press release. Residents will be limited to six banker-sized boxes of documents.

Supply-Chain Services will recycle the electronics. In compliance with the Electronics Products Recycling and Reuse Act, only the following electronics will be accepted, according to the press release.

Computers - PCs and laptops

Computer monitors

Scanners, printers and fax machines

Peripherals - mice, keyboards and zip drives

Televisions

Video game consoles

Mobile phones, MP3 players and PDAs

DVD players, DVR/cable boxes and VHS players

Over 4 millions pounds of electronics have been recycled at SWANCC events since 1999, according to the press release. Approximately 658,000 pounds of paper have been shredded and recycled since 2005.
