Park District Explores Skate Park Idea, Pours Concrete For Outdoor Ice Rink

Interested teens have been asked to scout locations for the skate park.

Niles Park District officials have formed an exploratory committee to begin preliminary plans for a skateboarding park.

Several local teens have attended park board meetings to campaign for a skate park and while officials are considering the project, no definite plans are in place. Those same teens are a part of the exploratory committee.

The teens have been put in charge of researching possible locations in Niles for the park and possible fundraising events for the project, Czarnik said.

In other park district news, construction continues on the Outdoor Rink. Concrete is being poured this week and while some glass for the project needed to be reordered, work is coming along as planned, said Marty Stankowicz, general manager and hockey director.

Officials also put in a bid for a on the and costs were much lower than anticipated, said Tom Elenz, director of finance for the district.

Officials initially estimated costs at $350,000 but received a bid for $198,000. The bridge was damaged during rains and floods this summer. Construction will begin in December, Elenz said.
