Get Properly Prepared for Winter Weather

Morton Grove Emergency Management Agency gives tips on how to stay safe this winter.

This week, Nov. 13 through Nov. 19, is Winter Weather Preparedness Week in Illinois.

In early February of this year, , and northwest Indiana. Thousands of people were stranded, schools and businesses were closed for days, and there were numerous extended power outages. Despite warnings more than a day in advance, many people were caught unprepared.

Take time to prepare yourself and your family for the coming winter months. The National Weather Service long range forecasts are predicting another severe winter season.

Make a Check List

Make sure you have plenty of non-perishable food, drinking water, a battery powered Weather Radio and portable AM/FM radio, flashlights, medication and a first aid kit. Also, have a plan for warmth and safety in case you lose power and heat. Create a kit for each vehicle you have with many of the same itemsbut include extra clothing, blankets, a tow rope, jumper cables, sand or cat litter and basic tools.
