Local Non-Profits Will Lose Tax-Exempt Status

The IRS is stripping tax-exempt status from 275,000 nonprofits nationwide for failure to file tax forms.

Local non-profit organizations, including Niles' Alliance of Polish Clubs in the United States and Park Ridge's Amateur Hockey Association of Illinois, will soon lose their tax-exempt status.

The I.R.S. revoked that status for 275,000 non-profits across the country because they didn't file annual tax forms they are legally required to, according to The New York Times.

The I.R.S. said it went to great lengths to notify non-profits of their obligation to file the tax forms, but probably did not succeed in reaching all of them. Some IRS officials say most of the organizations on the list may no longer be operating, and several calls placed by the New York Times reached phone numbers that were no longer in service.
