Niles Firefighters Honored

Village passes proclamation in preparation for department's 100-year anniversary.

 

Compared to today, fire-fighting was rudimentary in 1912. That, however, is when the got its start, in the form of a state charter on Feb. 19.

The Niles Village Board issued a proclamation at its Tuesday meeting to mark the upcoming centennial.

The proclamation touched on some highlights in the department's history, including its seven initial members, its transition to a full-time department in 1953, the start of paramedic service in 1974 and the five fire chiefs since the department went full-time.

Mayor Robert Callero proclaimed that Feb. 19, 2012 marks the beginning of the Village of Niles Fire Department's 100th Anniversary Year.
