Niles Flooding: 668 Homes File Flood Surveys

Within a short window of time, 668 households completed Cook County flood surveys, which could trigger financial aid for flooded homes. Plus, Red Cross will distribute flood cleanup kits Sunday 10 am to 6 pm.

Though it's hard to get a handle on the number of homes in Niles which flooded, 668 residents completed and submitted flood surveys to the village, according to Steve Vinezeano, acting village manager.

Of those, 84 percent said damages to their homes were caused by sewer backup.

Six percent of those were multi-family homes, and 93 percent were single-family.  Ninety-six percent were owners.

The village asked residents Tuesday to fill out the short survey by 4 p.m. Friday. The survey was requested by Cook County, whose officials said if damages total about $17.9 million countywide, it would trigger the possibility of state or federal disaster assistance, including possible financial aid to homeowers who suffered flood damage.
