Niles Hires Lawyer In Alleged Sex Assault Case

Trustee says board voted to hire attorney to handle a case of a police officer accused of sexual assault. An arbitrator ruled Niles must reinstate him with 21 months of back pay and benefits.

 

The Niles village board voted Wednesday to hire a law firm to handle potential litigation.

The village of Niles, Markadas' employer, suspended him without pay after the incident.

In the January 2010 incident, a waitress working in a Niles bar said Markadas, who was off duty at the time, sexually assaulted her in the bar's basement. She reported it to police and filed civil charges, but not criminal charges, according to the Journal and Topics. 

On Wednesday, Przybylo said, "We had a vote to engage the attorney and negotiate and carry the case forward." He said he didn't know what form that was going to take.
