Niles Issues Broadcast Message Warning of Severe Heat

Mayor urges residents to get to a cool place, suggesting grocery stores or village buildings.

At about noon Wednesday, Niles' residents phones rang with a recorded message from Mayor Robert Callero warning them of a National Weather Service heat advisory.

The mayor advised residents to stay in a cool place, suggesting grocery stores, malls or village buildings such as the Niles Family Fitness Center in Civic Center Plaza, which is at the southeast corner of Oakton Street and Waukegan Road, Niles.

Callero also asked residents to check on neighbors, especially the elderly and the ill.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory until 8 p.m. Monday, warning people to seek out air-conditioned places and put off strenuous activity until later in the day if possible.

Callero advised residents who need a cool place after business hours to call 847-588-6500. That number reaches the front desk of the Niles Police Department.
