Niles' New Tax Goes Into Effect

The board enacted a 0.25 percent sales tax increase to help fund anti-flooding measures. It went into effect July 1.

 

On Tuesday, the Niles village board voted to Three years in the making, it's intended to prevent the flooding that has besieged many areas of the village for decades. 

On Sunday, the 0.25 percent sales tax that the village passed back in January to fund flood-relief efforts went into effect.

At that time,  Niles' sales tax now stands at 9.5 percent.  It went down to 9.25 percent on Jan. 1, 2012, because Cook County lowered its sales tax.

However, the 0.25 percent (25 cents on $100) Niles sales tax increase on July 1 brought it back up to 9.5 percent.
