Niles Patch Poll Finds 58% Agree With Removing Blase Sign

Out of 117 votes, 58 percent agreed with village board's decision.

After the Niles village board voted Tuesday to remove the Nicholas B. Blase Plaza sign that sat outside village hall, Niles Patch polled readers on whether they agreed with the decision.

The poll, which ran in the story, garnered 117 votes. It asked the question, "Do you agree with the Niles Village Board's vote to remove the sign honoring former mayor Nicholas Blase, who was convicted of fraud and tax evasion?" Of those, 69 (58 percent) chose the option, "Yes, honoring a corrupt ex-mayor sends the wrong message." Forty-eight (41 percent) chose the option, "No, Blase did a lot of good for the village and should be honored."

The poll, which was open from 6 a.m. Wednesday until 11 p.m. Thursday, has now closed. That means readers will no longer be able to click on an option. The poll is not scientifically valid, but rather meant to engage the community.
