Niles Raises Water Rates Due to Chicago's Hikes

Niles is looking into saving money by buying water from Evanston.

Despite the overabundance of water from last week's flooding, water will now cost more in Niles.

The village board voted Tuesday to raise the water rate from $6.06 per 1,000 gallons to $6.67 per 1,000 gallons, effective June 1. That's a 10 percent increase.

The move comes in response to the City of Chicago raising water rates 25 percent in 2012, and 15 percent in each of the following three years, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Acting Village Manager Steve Vinezeano said the village is looking into buying water from Evanston, which would be less expensive.

"It’s one of our top priorities to find relief from the continually increasing water prices from Chicago," he commented.

However, Trustee Joe LoVerde noted the village's contract with the city of Chicago runs until 2020.
