Niles To Measure Employees' Performance With Metrics

Employees will now get measurable job goals, and be accountable to meet them.

The Niles Board of Trustees approved a Performance Management Plan for employees at its Monday meeting.

Championed by Mayor Andrew Przybylo, the plan would set measurable job goals for employees and use metrics to measure whether they met them. The results would be reflected in their employee reviews.

"It would motivate employees to meet goals and initiatives," Przybylo said in introducing the measure.

Przybylo has spoken many times, in village board meetings and when he campaigned for mayor, of wanting to put in such a system.

"It has saved Cook County over $3 million a year," Przybylo said. He is a full-time employee of Cook County government.

The wording of the ordinance says performance management will improve the way the village delivers services to residents, provide solid numbers to managers so they can make informed decisions, ensure that village departments are fiscally responsible and improve residents' trust in the village's performance.

"This is something we can accomplish, and I'm very excited about it," said Village Manager Steve Vinezeano.

"It’s a learning experience...it looks scary but it’s not scary.

It will make the village run more efficiently, he added, and when department heads see they've reached 80 percent of their goals but it's only halfway through the year, "they get excited about it."
