Parking Woes In Nordica Area Of Niles To Be Eased

The lack of parking near Nordica Apartments, just east of Culver School has caused headaches, but a solution is near, the village of Niles announced.

For residents who live on or near Nordica Avenue in Niles, parking has been a sore spot for years.

The lack of it forces residents who live in apartments and townhomes on Nordica just south of Oakton, across from Culver School, to park their cars on streets to the south. That in turn has put parking pressures on the residents of single family homes on those streets, which include Jonquil Terrace, Dobson Street and Nottingham Avenue.

The situation has intensified over the decades as families typically own more cars now than in the 1960s, when many of the homes were built.

Culver School has allowed some parking in the warmer-weather months, but requires cars to be removed by 6 a.m., which is not practical for many residents.

The village of Niles announced that it has reached a Special Service agreement with the owner of Nordica Apartments to create 56 new parking spaces. They will be limited to residents of Nordica Apartments, but because residents will be able to park in them, the village expects that to free up a lot of street parking.

Mayor Andrew Przybylo recently sent out two letters to residents of the neighborhood. In both, he reminded them of his declaration of Good Neighbor month, and asked them to show courtesy to neighbors. One letter went to Nordica Apartments residents, asking them to be careful not to block driveways or fire hydrants or park longer than three days.

Another letter went to residents of the homes on the streets south of Nordica Apartments, asking them for their patience and telling them a solution is in the works.
