Public Hearing On Niles $90.1 Million Budget Tonight

At 6:30 p.m., the Niles board of trustees will hear the public's comments on its proposed $90.1 million budget for fiscal 2014. The board will vote on adopting the budget at its May meeting.

 

If you have a comment or question on the village of Niles proposed budget for fiscal 2014, which runs from May 1, 2013 to April 30, 2014, the village is holding a public hearing at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 23.

Some highlights of the budget are:

  • The total budgeted expenses are  $90,125,887.
  • The village has drawn on some reserves.
  • Employee salaries and benefits make up 49 percent of the expenses.
  • The budget includes $12.5 million in capital projects, though other projects and expenses were postponed or denied.
  • The General Fund expenses are $43.4 million and make up 48 percent of the budget. 
  • The General Fund will spend about $1 million more than it takes in, using reserves to balance the fund, according to TribLocal. 
  • Sales tax is the largest source of revenue for the General Fund and provides 58% of revenue for the fund.
