Red Light Camera $100 Fines Are Starting

The red light camera will be training on northbound Waukegan Road motorists at Dempster in Morton Grove. Police will start assessing fines on July 4.

Starting Wednesday, Morton Grove will start issuing $100 fines for drivers caught by its red-light camera.

The camera records violations by motorists driving northbound on Waukegan Road approaching Dempster Street. It has been operating for a month, but so far, violators have received only a warning letter.

"Very simply, motorists can avoid a red-light camera ticket by not traveling through the intersection when the lights are in the red light phase of the light cycle," said Morton Grove Police Officer Ken Van Der Haegan. "Also by coming to a complete stop prior to turning right on red at the intersection."

Village Administrator Ryan Horne said there had been a number of accidents at the intersection, and that the village applied to have red light cameras put in for all directions, but that the Illinois Department of Transportation considered the traffic data and approved only the camera for northbound traffic.

The village board approved the camera Nov. 24, 2009.

According to the village's website, the camera is administered by American Traffic Solutions, Inc. (ATS) with each violation reviewed and approved by the Morton Grove Police Department prior to being issued. For more information on how the technology works, click here
