Shred Documents, Recycle Electronics June 30
Is it time to shred the paper and shed the old machines cluttering up your home? A local environmental agency is holding a Niles event Saturday, June 30 to take these things off your hands.
Maybe you just want the TV, computer, printer or scanner that no longer works out of your basement, and you know a new law forbids them from going into the garbage.
Or maybe you're concerned about filling up landfills with these worn-out machines, which could potentially leach toxins into the soil.

You can safely recycle these devices, along with game consoles, cell phones, DVD and VHS players, fax machines and more on Saturday, June 30 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Niles Public Services Department building, 6849 W. Touhy Avenue, Niles.

You can also have sensitive documents, such as old bank statements, tax forms and medical records, shredded in this combined Document Destruction/Electronics Recycling event sponsored by the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County, a consortium of 23 member suburbs. The agency focuses on recyling, waste reduction and environmentally-friendly practices.
“SWANCC’s goal is to provide convenient and environmentally-sound programs to assist residents with recycling materials, which keeps potentially harmful as well as recoverable materials from going to a landfill,” said Mary Allen, SWANCC Recycling and Education Director, in a statement.
Free if you live in these suburbs
The event is free, but only to residents of SWANCC's member communities, which locally include Niles, Morton Grove, Park Ridge, Skokie, Glenview, Lincolnwood, Evanston, Wilmette and Winnetka, Mount Prospect, Prospect Heights and Arlington Heights.

You can drive up to the facility, where workers will check your ID to determine residency, then unload your electronics for recycling and documents for shredding.
Provisions to keep data private
Naturally, you're concerned about the privacy of information on your computer, and a SWANCC video shows how it contracts with SSI, Inc. to erase, demanufacture and process electronics' hard drives.
Accurate Document Destruction, a division of Groot Industries, will perform all document destruction on-site. Documents may contain staples and paper clips, but please remove binders.
