Trustees hear proposal on "Fear City"

The Planning Commission tells the board that it supports a special use permit for the haunted house to open in October.

Fear was  on the minds of Morton Grove officials at their regular meeting Monday, but it was of an unusual variety.

Village trustees heard a presentation from the Planning Commission about  and their support of a proposal for hoping to open in October.

The facility would only be open for the month of October and would service an estimated 20,000 customers at $20 to $30 per person. The company would also provide on-site parking to avoid a strain on nearby neighborhoods.

"The unique thing about this is that it's generating traffic when there's no other traffic in the area," said Planning Commissioner Steve Blonz. "The resumes of the owners were very professional. It sounds like it could be an interesting venture for the community."

Blonz voiced the Planning Commission's support for a special use permit—at their meeting, the commissioners approved a petition for the permit 6–0 with one member absent. But they also suggested  a special "entertainment" clause that would not only clarify the purpose of an institution like Fear City but would also specifically prohibit gambling facilities in the future. Blonz reminded the board that these actions could be undone later.

"This will be a 'special use,' so it can be rescinded," Blonz said. "If it doesn't work, it can be suspended, and we can shut them down."

It was the trustees's first read of the possible ordinance, so no action will be taken until the July 11 meeting. Some did voice positive opinions, however.

"You did not wait for questions to be asked about your business, you anticipated them," said Trustee John Thill. "I think you did a very professional job."
