Meet Your April 5 Candidates: Doug Bressler, Niles Library

Don't know who to vote for in the local elections? Patch questions the candidates so you can make an informed choice.

"All politics is local" and "The closer to home, the greater the impact on your pocketbook" are two truisms in politics.

The candidates in local elections affect how much you pay in taxes, and what you get for your money, more than candidates in state and national races.

So who are these folks who will impact your life and your wallet? Find out in Patch's "Meet the Candidates" series, running now through the end of March. Then make an informed choice when you vote in the April 5 election.

1) How would you assess the state of the library district’s budget?
I think the $6 million budget has been handled well by the current trustees and I look forward to continuing to help them keep it balanced in the future.

2) If expenses need to be reduced, exactly what would you cut? Be specific.

Before I would suggest any change be made, I would thoroughly evaluate every aspect of the budget to see what can be reorganized instead of making cuts.
3) If more revenue needs to be raised, exactly what would you propose? Be specific.

I would organize various fund raising opportunities and contributions.

4) What’s the best way for the library to keep up with changing technologies, such as the way people access books and materials? (Example: eBooks, iPods, and developing technologies).

I feel that it is very important the library should remain current in technology and should research on how they best can be implemented.

5) Is the library adequately providing the following, or do you feel these need to be adopted or augmented: computers, study rooms, reading areas, drive-through book drop-offs, self-checkout stations, refreshments/food. Would you suggest any others?

The library provides an abundance of services to the patrons of the Niles Public Library.

6) What is your favorite childhood book? What are you currently reading?

The Berenstain's B Book.  I am currently reading "Mr. Monk in Trouble."

7) Is the library adequately reaching out to diverse populations, i.e., people with primary languages other than English, people with visual difficulties, others?

The library carries an extensive collection of multi-cultural books and media and continues to expand it;s catalog.

8) Does the library need upgrades to its facilities? Be specific.

I do not think that the library needs any upgrades at the current time.

9) What else would you like voters to know about your positions on issues, point of view or qualifications?
