Don't Be Victimized This Holiday Season

Don't let a pickpocket ruin your shopping trip, or a burglar be the Grinch when you're out celebrating the holiday.

Holidays bring with it the great shopping rush that starts on Black Friday. Please follow these tips from the Niles Police Department and the Illinois Crime Prevention Association, so that you don't experience the loss of that special gift or the inconvenience of calling the police to file a report.

When shopping:

  • Do not fall for scams. Remember, if it is too good to be true, it’s probably a scam! Ask yourself why a stranger would be giving you money or special treatment.
  • Teach children who they should contact if lost, such as a police officer or security guard.

For your home:

  • Lights are one of the least expensive forms of home security.
  • If you are away, use timers on your lights. Have someone you trust watch your home and pick up your mail and newspapers. Have them shovel your walks and driveways if needed. Leave a car in the driveway. Make it appear you’re home.
  • Keep your doors locked at all times, even when home!
  • Question and require identification from anyone attempting to enter your home or call the police to have them checked out.
