District 71 Reaches Agreement With Teachers
Agreement includes 3 percent raise, and longer work day, for teachers.
Niles Elementary School District 71, which operates Clarence E. Culver School in Niles, has reached an agreement with its teachers union on a contract.

The Niles Elementary School District 71 Board of Education and Niles Council of Teachers are proud to announce the ratification of the teachers and support staff contract. Contract negotiations began in January of 2012 and were finished at the beginning of June. As in the past, this was a collaborative effort from both parties who reached a resolution that continues to put the students' needs first, while reaching a fair settlement for the teachers and the community. The details are as follows:
- A four year agreement beginning in July 2012 until June 2016
- An extended work day for teachers in 2012-2013 by 20 minutes
- An extended day for teachers in 2013-2014 for 35 minutes total ( an additional 15 minutes more than 2012-2013)
- 2012-2013 3% raise which includes step
- 2013-2014 through 2015-2016 yearly increases using CPI as a factor with step costs included
- Modifies the medical benefit plan and increases staff’s contribution over the four years.
- Modifies the retirement notice and reduces increases under this benefit to 1% over the general staff increases.
- Current support staff will receive CPI raises, as certified staff, but new support staff starting salaries will roll back to 2010-2011 starting salary rates.
