Fixing District 63 Computers Will Cost $46,000; Audit To Start Today

The district's computer system suffered a virus that shut it down in August.

Upgraded computer security

Judy Satkiewicz, the technology director in East Maine Elementary District 63, said that security upgrades recommended after a virus shut down the district’s computer network in late August will cost $46,000. She can find the money by putting off some purchases that were scheduled for this year until next year.

Satkiewicz shared the information with the District 63 school board at the Oct. 5 meeting as part of a report on the activities of the technology department.

Other activities include summer technology workshops for staff, increased opportunities for online technology training during the school year, added emphasis on using software that will help students acquire 21st century skills such as collaboration and problem solving and updated training on Internet safety.

“Internet safety does change rapidly, so we use information from the Illinois Attorney General’s Office,” she said.

School vice president John Jekot suggested that the district use contingency funds to pay for the security upgrades rather than putting off planned software purchases.

Compliance visit set

A team of auditors will visit Maine Township Elementary District 63 today to make sure it is in compliance with all state laws and mandates that apply to public schools, Superintendent Scott Clay told school board members on Oct. 5.

Preparing for the visit has kept central office staff busy, Clay said.

Results of the inspection will be made public when the school district receives them.

Principal appreciation day

Oct. 21 will be Principal Appreciation Day in East Maine Elementary District 63. The school board approved unanimously approved a resolution designating the day in an unanimous vote.

principal Scott Hermann, the only principal in attendance at the Oct. 5 meeting, said he felt duly appreciated.

Donations accepted

East Maine Elementary District 63 accepted a donation of Donation of six Acushnet/Titleist Golf bags and six  junior golf hats to Gemini Junior High School from Acushnet/Titleist Golf Company.

It also accepted used Fisher Price toys for the Early Childhood Center at Melzer School from school board member Sheila Urban.
