Mayor Offers Condolences at MCC School

After an 18-year-old alumna of the school died, and current student was hospitalized, Morton Grove Mayor Dan Staackmann offered condolences at the school

Last week, Morton Grove Mayor Dan Staackmann visited the Muslim Community Center Full-Time School to offer condolences.

Students, teachers and parents at the Muslim Community Center Full-Time School had been saddened to learn that an alumna, 18-year-old Zainab Ahmed, had died.

Zainab, a 2009 graduate of the school, was an honors student at St. Scholastica High School in Chicago. She and her grandmother died, apparently as a result of carbon monoxide and a malfunctioning carbon monoxide monitor.

Five children in the family, including her sister Amina, a current sixth-grader at the school, were hospitalized and later released.

Last Wednesday, Staackmann stopped by the school to offer condolences to the school community and spoke with the kids.

"The Muslim community appreciated the gesture, and the school kids got a sense of how any tragedy touches everyone in our town," said Rizwan Kadir, past president of the school board.
