Niles West Jazzes It Up

Two school bands play with DePaul Jazz Ensemble.

Niles West student musicians shared a program with DePaul University Jazz Ensemble players when the high school hosted "An Evening of Jazz" recently.

Click on the video to hear the DePaul band, with Bob Lark, director of jazz studies at the university, playing a Thomas Matta arrangement of the Howard Dietz and Arthur Schwartz tune "Bye Bye Blackbird."

Both the Niles West Jazz Band and Pop 'N Rock, another student jazz band, performed in the March 17 concert.

"The Niles West Jazz Band director (Ryan Adamsons) and the Pop 'N Rock director (David Agee) were both students of Bob Lark's when they were at DePaul," said Mary Jo Papich, Director of Fine Arts for Niles Township High School District 219. That personal connection helped in bringing Lark and DePaul to Niles West, she explained.

  • May 5-7- "The King and I," the Broadway musical.
  • May 14- "Pasta 'n Pops," which Papich described as "a musical extravaganza," along with a pasta dinner.
