Niles West & North, Maine East Nationally Ranked by Newsweek

The magazine's 2013 rankings came out Monday. It listed these three high schools, but not Maine South or Maine West.

Newsweek has ranked Niles West High School and Niles North High School as the #785 and #833 schools in the country respectively. The magazine ranked Maine East High School at #1,817. It ranked what it named as the top 2,000 schools nationally. Neither Maine South nor Maine West High Schools in Maine Township High School District 207 made the list.

Responding to Maine East's ranking, District 207 spokesman Dave Beery said, "We are always pleased to see recognition of the hard work and teaching innovation occurring in all of our schools."

Weigh in: Do you agree with Newsweek’s ranking?

For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. You can see the details about Niles West's ranking, and every other ranked high school by clicking on the markers in the interactive map above.

The survey scores were then weighted and calculated using several criteria including on-time graduation and college acceptance rates. In addition, instead of averaging the number of courses offered, this year Newsweek considered the percentage of students enrolled in AP, IB or Advance International Certificate courses. The final scores then determined Newsweek’s final rankings.
