Police Monitor Notre Dame After Bomb Threat

Bomb squad called in, though students may have made threat to get out of classes.

Niles police were monitoring Notre Dame College Prep in Niles Friday after someone made a security threat.

"We had a couple of extra officers there at the request of the school," said Sgt. Robert Tornabene of the police department.

The Cook County bomb squad was at the Catholic boys' high school Friday morning before students arrived, he said. Young men from Chicago and several surrounding suburbs attend the school.

Some students speculated that a student might have made the threat in order to get out of classes today, she said.

Tornabene acknowledge that possibility.

"Anytime there's something scrawled on a wall on a high school, that's always something we look into," he said.

Principal Dan Tully said he preferred not to comment about the incident.

Tornabene said Niles police would continue to work with the school and have a presence there for a time.

"They want to make sure the students are safe," he said.
