Top Scholar Hopes for Career in Physics, Medicine

Michael Nissan, who attends Niles West High School, is one of the National Merit Semi-Finalists.

Michael Nissan, a senior at , recently received word he's a National Merit Semifinalist.

Rachel Burton and Benjamin Marks of Niles North High School also earned the distinction, which is based on academic achievement. The National Merit Scholarship Corp., a non-profit organization, awards the distinction to only a few thousand high school students across the country, who are then eligible to receive scholarships.

"I'm really glad I got it," Nissan remarked.

He studies until about 11 p.m. each night and maintains close to a 4.0 grade point average, with his favorite subjects being math, computer science and physics. He takes a number of advanced placement classes.

Outside of school hours, Nissan is on the math team (which competes with other schools), the scholastic bowl and the WHO Club (West Helping Others, a volunteering club). He plays piano, and in the summer he golfs and does cycling.

In college, he hopes to study math, computer science, physics or medicine.
