MAYORAL RESULT IN MORTON GROVE ELECTION

What the mayoral election will hold in the future for Morton Grove

Although the results of the mayoral election in Morton Grove were not a huge surprise, I was hoping that somehow Larry Gomberg could overcome the forces of Dan DiMaria positioned against him.

The numbers did not reflect a rejection of Larry Gomberg, nor did they indicate a mandate for Di Maria.  The turnout was pitifully small, which gave more weight to the Action Party stalwarts and recent hanger-on's of the Caucus Party.  The result is that we can expect a continuation of the one party rule in Morton Grove.  I was disappointed in the support given to Di Maria from the Caucus people.  It was understandable that they might support him in pushing out their former nemesis, Dan Staackmann, but helping Di Maria and the Action Party shows that the last major party opposed to Action, is no longer viable.  Di Maria may portray himself as someone new on the scene, but he is basically an Action Party stalwart, who will continue the one voice government we currently have in the village.  I think that most Morton Grove residents do not understand the ramifications of that situation.   It is also unfortunate that no residents stepped forward to put up some candidates for the three open trustee positions.  So now we have basically the same one party people, with a few new faces.  We can look forward to limited discussions at the village board meetings and no true monitoring of village plans and activity.  We should be wary of Di Maria draining the village resources to promote his plans for bringing in new business to Morton Grove.

My only hope is that some residents will step forward in the next election in two years for two trustees, who will be true voices to balance out the current one party in power.   I ran for trustee several elections back, but I think we need some new and younger people to step forward.
