Maine South Sports Roundup: Cross Country Running With New Pack

Football got a revenge victory while volleyball lost a number of close matches last weekend.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY: It’s not often that a team can lose a runner like Dave Eckhart, who took seventh place at the state cross country meet last season, and come back in even better shape for the following season.

Maine South didn’t qualify for the state meet as a team last year – placing sixth at the Niles West sectional – but they seem poised to do so in 2011. The Hawks won the 12-team Lions Pride Invitational on September 3, outpacing second-place Sandburg 49-94.

Zach Eckhart paced the Hawks with a third-place finish in 15 minutes, 21 seconds while Jack Carpenter and Robert Taylor also had top-10 finishes. Carpenter crossed the line in sixth place (15:48) while Taylor took eighth (15:55).

FOOTBALL: Maine South avenged last year’s loss to Wheaton Warrenville South with a 13-9 victory at home on September 2. But the win didn’t come without some question marks. Maine South in Patch’s latest power rankings and Mike Helfgot of the Chicago Tribune brought up some questions about the Hawks’ special teams play.

The Hawks take on Deerfield on September 9.

Volleyball: Maine South went 2-3 in five games at the Early Bird Classic on September 2-3. The Hawks went 1-2 in pool play, falling to Elk Grove and Fremd while defeating Rolling Meadows. Their matches against Elk and Fremd couldn’t have been much closer. Maine South lost 26-24, 26-24 to Elk Grove and 26-24, 25-22 to Fremd.

The Hawks rallied to beat Woodstock 25-16, 25-22 before losing the 13th-place game to Harlem 25-22, 26-24.

GIRLS GOLF: Maine South narrowly beat Glenbrook South 178-188 for another dual match victory on September 7. Leia Atas took home medalist honors by shooting a 42 on nine holes at the Glenview Park District Golf Club. Kathleen Daly (44), Meredith Machon (44) and Carly Inman (48) also scored for Maine South.

BOYS SOCCER: The Hawks (3-1-3) finished in second place at the Quincy Labor Day Weekend Tournament with a record of 2-0-1. Maine South defeated Columbia Hickman (MO.) 2-1 and Macomb 3-1 with a scoreless tie against host Quincy. Phil Kulas had two goals on the weekend to lead Maine South.
