Maine South Sports Roundup: Girls Soccer Can't Overcome New Trier in Playoffs

Baseball is still waiting to play in the postseason due to weather while a girls basketball player was invited to try out for Team USA,

Girls Soccer: One goal in soccer is, at the same time, the narrowest difference and a wide gap. And for Maine South, that’s the feeling it’s had against New Trier, losing twice by one goal this season. The latest came in the section semifinal last week, when New Trier scored with seven minutes left to break a 1-1 tie.

Sophomore forward Alli Curry had the Hawks’ only goal on a shot from just outside the penalty box to tie the game at 1-1 in the first half. Goalie Katie Paddock made 10 saves in the loss.

Maine South also fell to New Trier, 1-0, at home in mid-April.

Four Hawks made the CSL All-Conference team. Seniors Carli Pappas, Aly Hayden and Alexis Sammarco along with junior Allison Cottrell received the honor.

Girls Basketball: Sophomore Jacqueline Grant is among 121 girls basketball players invited to participate in the USA U16 team trials this summer. Oswego East’s Le’Royia Campbell and Young’s Linnae Harper were the other area players invited to the tryout.

Twelve members will eventually be chosen to compete in the U16 Championships in Mexico with the top four teams in that event automatically qualifying for the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship.

Boys Volleyball: After defeating Loyola in the championship game of its own invitational to end the regular season, Maine South thought it was back on the right track to defend its regional and sectional titles from the past two seasons.

The Hawks cruised into the regional final with a 25-16, 25-19 win over Evanston and Glenbrook South, a team they crushed in early May, awaited in the finals. But Glenbrook South came through in the third game, winning 25-21, 22-25, 25-17 and ending Maine South’s season. Greg Sims and Spencer Groessl each had 11 kills while Jack Rickter chipped in with eight.

Baseball: Maine South beat Schaumburg, 6-2, in eight innings to end its regular season with a record of 20-9. John Gobbo went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs while Nick Calabrese pitched two innings out of the bullpen to get the win.

The Hawks’ postseason opener against Evanston has been postponed until Saturday afternoon.

Girls Track and Field: Four individuals and two relay teams finished their season at last weekend’s state champinoships. Maine South freshman Emily Leonard finished 16th in the 3,200 (11:22.75), the highest place for any of Maine South’s athletes. Both the 4x800 (9:45.28) and 4x200 (1:45.33) relays finished in 19th place, as did senior Monica Janeczek in the long jump (16-11.5)

Senior Kyle Sutschek took 22nd in discus (100-5) while Veronica Szklarzewski tied for 22nd in high jump (5-0).

Boys Track and Field: Nick Wisniewski made it out of the preliminaries on Friday with a mark of 14-03 in the pole vault. Michal Filipczak won the fast heat in Friday’s preliminaries to advance to Saturday’s finals in the 800 (1:52.54).
