Football: In its final tune-up before CSL South play begins, Maine South got up early and rested its starters in a 42-6 win over Niles North. The slow start from last season is well in the rear-view mirror by now as the Hawks are off to a 4-0 start and remain everybody’s pick to win the Class 8A championship for the fourth straight season.

Maine South has absolutely dominated the CSL South for the last decade, but teams like Evanston, New Trier and Glenbrook South don’t look like absolute pushovers. The Hawks may not lose in conference, but they will certainly benefit from playing some tougher teams before the playoffs begin.

Girls Tennis: Maine South went 1-1 last week, losing to York 6-1, but defeating conference opponent Evanston in a 7-0 sweep. Lauren Krone, Monika Spalinski and Nicole Dinkel all won easily at their respective singles spots. None of them gave up more than five games in their straight-set victories.

Maine South cruised in three of the four doubles spots as well. Caroline Cary and Lydia Collins combined for a 6-3, 6-3 victory at the No. 1 doubles spot while Claudia Aniol and Nicole Kitsuse won 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 2 position.

The No .3 doubles team of Stephanie Dawl and Caroline Borowski were the only players to lose a set, but rallied for a 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 win. Gabi Loyewski and Marisa Sclafani won easily with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 4 doubles.

Girls Swimming: Maine South took third place out six teams at the Palatine College Events Invitational on Sept. 17.

Individually, Maddy Coffey took second in the 100-meter free with a time of 1 minute, 2.08 seconds and was also the runner-up in the 200 free (2:16.12). Sophomore Jenna Zitkus came in third in the 400 IM (5:19.43) and 200 back (2:32.39).

The Hawks (208 points) finished behind University High(341) and Downers Grove North (220).

Boys Soccer: Maine South went 0-1-1 in CSL South play last week, playing Niles West to a scoreless tie before falling to Evanston 3-1.
