Maine South's Top 10 Sports Moments of 2010 - 2011

Several track athletes dominated while football won its third straight championship.

Here are Patch's picks for the Top 10 sports moments for Maine South during the past school year.

10. Andrew Salomon Breaks School’s 200 Freestyle Record: At the Glenbrook North Sectional, Salomon broke Maine South’s 27-year-old school record in the 200-yard freestyle by completing the four laps in 1 minute, 43.16 seconds and taking second. Salomon advanced to state for the third straight year.

9. Palucki’s Layup Defeats Trevians on the Road: After missing a free throw during crunch time, Matt Palucki to give Maine South its first win at New Trier since Tony Lavorato has been the head coach. Point guard Tony Albano set up Palucki with a lob pass inside.

8. Boys Soccer Gets Marathon Win in Regional Semifinals: It took four overtimes, but Marc Zaparaniuk’s goal gave Maine South an upset victory in the regional semifinals over Evanston. Zaparaniuk headed home the goal off a nice corner kick from senior Ben Hannon a little more than two minutes into the fourth overtime.

7. Dave Eckhart Completes Distance Double at Sectionals: With deep fields in both the 1600-meter run and 3200, the star senior knew it would be at the sectional championships. But after winning the 3200 early on, Eckhart finished third in the 1600 and qualified for state in both events.

6. Girls Soccer beats Niles North for Regional Crown: In one of the biggest games of the season, Maine South’s offense stepped up, scoring three goals en route to a regional championship. Senior Carli Pappas scored the game’s first goal on a hard shot from 30 yards out and Allison Cottrell and Jenny DiCola also added goals in a 3-1 victory.

5. Leonard, Lemersal Earn All-State Honors in Cross Country: For the first time, Maine South had two girls earn all-state. Emily Leonard, a freshman finished 19th while sophomore Megan Lemersal finished 23rd.

4. Wrestler Sean Sullivan Places Sixth at State: Sullivan finished the year with a record of 40-5 after splitting six matches at the state championships. He became only the seventh wrestler from Maine to place at state, finishing sixth in the 285-pound division.

Track Athletes Wisniewski, Filipczak Finish As State Runner-Ups: Senior Nick Wisniewski cleared 15 feet in the pole vault, a personal best, to finish second and junior Michal Filipczak placed second in the 800 (1:53.49). Filipczak had run the fastest time in the preliminaries with a time of 1:52.54.

2. Girls Basketball Takes 3rd Place At State: Maine South rallied from an 18-point second-half deficit to beat No. 2 Whitney Young in the third-place game. Center Jacqui Grant led the Hawks with 18 points.

1. Football Makes It A Three-Peat: Maine South silenced the critics after an 0-2 start by winning its next 12 games in a row and routing Mt. Carmel, 28-7, in the title game. Running back Paul Preston had 145 yards rushing on 21 carries and two touchdowns while sophomore quarterback Matt Alviti had one touchdown pass and one rushing touchdown.
