Niles West Sports Roundup: Gordon Runs to All-State Honors in 100

Baseball and softball's postseason runs have been disrupted by the recent cold weather.

Girls Soccer: The Wolves’ season came to an end in the Winnetka Regional finals as New Trier defeated Niles West, 3-1. Down 3-0 late in the second half, freshman Edan Scott scored the team’s lone goal with a shot from outside the box. Goalie Jackie Cardenas had 14 saves in the losing effort.

Niles West finished the season 8-12-3, but was winless (0-4-1) in the CSL South.

Girls Track and Field: Hampered by the hamstring injury that occurred at the sectional meet, Niles West senior sprinter Kellion Gordon took sixth in the 100 (12.15). Gordon missed the finals in the 200, placing 12th with a time of 25.25.

As a junior, Gordon was all-state in the 100 and 200, taking third place in both events. Gordon became the first Niles West athlete to garner three top-nine finishes at the state meet.

Sophomore Sydney Hellwig placed 15th in the 100 high hurdles (15.42), barely missing the finals. Senior Vicki Barela took 26th in triple jump (34-1) and sophomore Jasmine Townsend was 33rd in shot put (34-10.75).

Baseball: Niles West (22-12) closed out its regular season with a 7-3 win against Vernon Hills. Nick Wheeler (6-3) got the victory, giving up one earned run in two innings pitched. Kyle Colleta has two hits and two RBIs while Kenny Blanchard led the way offensively with three hits and two RBIs to pace Niles West.

Niles West’s postseason run has been put on hold temporarily as its first playoff game is postponed until Saturday. The Wolves’ Winnetka Regional semifinal matchup against Maine West was originally scheduled for Thursday, but was moved back because of inclement weather and scheduling issues.

Boys Volleyball: After shaking off the rust of a 10-day layoff and rallying past Prospect in a three-game match in the regional semifinals, Niles West (20-17) lost to a tough Glenbrook North squad 25-14, 25-16, to end its season.

Senior Paul Nasui led the Wolves with four kills. Junior middle hitter Nathan Celinski contributed two kills and an ace while sophomore outside hitter Narcis Ardelean put away two kills and had one block.

The Wolves won seven more games compared to last season (13-21) under second-year head coach Drew Roche.

The Wolves beat Prospect 25-27, 25-14, 25-21 on May 24 at home.

Softball: The start of Niles West’s postseason has been delayed because of weather. The Wolves are set to play CSL South foe Maine South at home on Friday afternoon. The Wolves split two games with Maine South during the regular season. Niles West won, 10-6, in late April while Maine South took the most recent meeting, 5-3, on May 11.
