Niles West Sports Roundup: Volleyball Takes Home Northside Prep Tournament Title

Boys golf prepares for the postseason while cross country got in one of its last races before regionals.

Girls Volleyball: Niles West swept through the Northside Prep Tournament for the second year in a row, winning the mid-season invitational with a 25-14, 25-9 victory over Jones.

Sophomore Olivia Rusek was named the tournament MVP and Milena Zalloni was also honored on the all-tournament team. Rusek had eight kills in the Wolves’ championship win.

Niles West didn’t lose a set during the entire tournament, beating Jones, Brooks and Simeon in pool play. They defeated Curie in the semifinals to set up a rematch with Jones in the finals.

Niles North finished in third place in the tournament.

Fresh off its tournament title, Niles West fell to Evanston 24-26, 25-12, 25-11 on Sept. 27.

Boys Golf: Maine West edged Niles West 137-139 on Sept. 20 in a CSL crossover dual match. Nate Lee and Alex Darville both shot 33 on nine holes to share medalist honors with Maine West’s Jonas Vonaulock and Matt Gutzeit.

The Wolves finished in fifth place at the CSL South conference championships on Tuesday. Niles West was led by Lee and David Lotsof, who both shot 78 at Sportsman’s Country Club in Northbrook.

New Trier took home the conference title for the third year in a row.

Boys Cross Country: Niles West went 1-2 in a CSL South quad meet on Tuesday, one of the last tune-ups before the postseason rolls around. Niles West fell to New Trier and Maine South, but defeated Glenbrook South 23-32. Marc-Daniel Julien was the Wolves’ top finisher, placing third in 15:16 while Neal Omar took fifth in 15:22.

Football: Niles West’s playoff hopes took a big hit last week with a 27-14 loss to Waukegan. QB Mike McGivern had two interceptions and only completed eight passes for 69 yards.

With four games left against Maine South, New Trier, Evanston and Glenbrook South, things do not look good for the Wolves, even after a quick start to the season.
