Notre Dame Tops Winners In Holiday Tourney
The Dons beat Alcott, Carmel and Naperville Central before rising to the challenge of besting Niles North 54-52.
Notre Dame's varsity basketball team beat a strong and aggressive Niles North team 54-52 to win the championship bracket of the Wheeling Hardwood Classic on Saturday, December 29, 2012. The Dons beat Alcott, Carmel, and Naperville Central before the final game against Niles North. Matt Mooney '13 was named tournament MVP and Jake Maestranzi '13 was named to all-tournament team.
A strong team effort is credited for the team's success. Outstanding defense was evident in the play of Donte "Scooter" Stephenson '13, Duante Stephens '14, and Eddie Serrano '13. Serrano led the team throughout the tournament in both offensive and defensive rebounds. Major contributions also from Danny Lazzara '13, Amar Bacar '16, Pat Dillon '14, and Billy Hirsch '13. The Dons are currently 13-1 and looking forward to their next conference game against Benet on January 4, 2013 at ND.
