Vikings Sports Roundup: Cross-Country Sweeps CSL North Quad Meet

Volleyball rebounds after a tough weekend tournament while football lost to the state's top team.

Girls Tennis: The Vikings went 1-2 last week, beating Maine West, but losing to Maine South and Deerfield. Senior captain Erica Markovitz continues to the lead Vikings, going 2-1 on the week.

“Erica is playing her smartest tennis this year,” Niles North coach John Amaro said. “Her willingness to battle has always been high, now she is analyzing her opponents well, and it is paying off.”

Markovitz lost to Deerfield 6-2, 6-2, but gave up a total of three games in her two victories over Maine South and Maine West.

Rebekkah Fornalewski went 2-0 on the week with wins against Maine South and Maine West.

“(Rebekkah) is a terrific contributor at singles and doubles,” Amaro said. “Her skills allow me a lot of flexibility to put her at singles or doubles.”

Niles North moved to 6-3 on the season.

Boys Cross-Country: Aron Sebhat led a Niles North sweep at the CSL North quad meet involving Niles North, Glenbrook, Deerfield and Maine East. Sebhat finished the course in 15 minutes, 53 seconds while Tim Vasquez (16:21), Carlitos Rangel (16:21), Micah Beller (16:21) and Dan Noboa (16:28) rounded out the top five.

Niles North kept its conference record perfect on the season.  

Girls Volleyball: Niles North had a rough outing in Maine East’s volleyball tournament last weekend, finishing the tournament with a 1-4 record. The Vikings defeated Stagg 21-25, 26-24, 15-13 in pool play, but ultimately ended up in the consolation bracket. Their closest contest came against Riverside-Brookfield in a 17-25, 25-16, 28-26 defeat.

But Niles North rebounded with two wins during the week, defeating CSL North foes Deerfield and Maine West, both in two games. Taylor Louis was the Vikings’ offensive leader in both games. Louis had 10 kills in the Vikings’ 25-21, 25-16 victory over Deerfield and another eight kills in the 25-12, 25-10 win against Maine West. Karime Assaf also had three kills and two blocks against the Warriors.

Girls Cross-Country: As the season winds down, Niles North is preparing for the regional championships. The Vikings took fifth in the nine-team Libertyville Invitational and then went 1-2 in a CSL North quad meet with Glenbrook North, Maine East and Deerfield. Clara Williamson (20 minutes, 20 seconds) took fourth overall for Niles North, who lost to Glenbrook North and Deerfield, but defeated Maine East. Katherine Betz finished in 22:09 while Lauren Yuen followed in 22:11.

Football: Niles North lost Maine South 42-6 on Sept 16. Starting QB Billy Voitik did not play due to a concussion and his absence hurt the Vikings’ offense. Oshayne Brown led the Vikings with 153 rushing yards on 27 carries and Niles North’s only score came courtesy of a 1-yard touchdown run from Vincent Rodriguez.
