Vikings Sports Roundup: Hot-Hitting Sophomore Leads Way for Niles North Softball

Girls soccer looks for a conference championship while boys volleyball lost a pair of crucial games.

Softball: Thanks to the hot hitting of Kristin Reichert, Niles North’s (10-7, 4-2 CSL North) offense has found a rhythm through April and into May. The sophomore first baseman clubbed six home runs and had 27 RBIs in the month of April, easily the team leader in both categories.

“[Reichert] has been hot with the bat and solid defensively,” Niles North coach Karin Wick said.

Against Deerfield last week,  with two home runs and seven RBIs to lead Niles North to a 16-3 win.

The Vikings went 1-2 in last weekend’s Rolling Meadows Tournament and split two crucial CSL North games earlier this week. Niles North lost a tough 3-2 decision on the road against Maine West on May 2. Rachel Matthies went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Vikings. But Niles North rebounded to beat conference co-leader Glenbrook North, 4-2, the following day. Jessica Loy led the Vikings offense, going 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs.

In a non-conference matchup, Niles North fell 6-2 to Loyola on Wednesday.

Baseball: The Vikings hit a rough patch last week, going 0-4 against conference opponents. Niles North lost a pair of games to Glenbrook North and fell to Maine South, 10-0, when Hawks pitcher A.J. Sus tossed a perfect game in six innings. Maine West beat Niles North, 3-2, on May 3.

Boys Volleyball: After a big upset victory over Glenbrook North, Niles North has slipped in its past two CSL North matchups. The Vikings fell to Highland Park in a tight two-game match 25-21, 26-24 on April 28. Andre Shaw led Niles North with seven kills in the match.

Niles North also lost to Maine West 25-14, 21-25, 23-25 on May 3 to fall out of first place in the conference.

Girls SoccerNiles North tied Glenbrook North, 1-1, in a crucial CSL North matchup on May 3. The Spartans’ Casey Kurz scored with 13 seconds left to earn a tie for Glenbrook North. Jeanine Taerbaum scored the Vikings’ lone goal 11 minutes into the game off a pass from Tiffany Eberling. Goalie Monica Rosenberg had 10 saves to pace the defense.

The tie capped an undefeated week for Niles North as the Vikings also defeated Leyden (3-1) and Deerfield (1-0) in the past seven days.

Boys Tennis: The Vikings split their four matches last week. Niles North edged Northridge Prep (3-2) and Maine West (4-3) before losing to CSL North matchups to conference power Deerfield (6-1) and Glenbrook North (5-2).
