Niles Declares Heat Emergency; Where To Cool Off


The Village of Niles has declared a heat alert through Friday, July 19th. Temperatures are expected to be in the low 90’s with afternoon heat index values ranging from 100 to 106 degrees.

Here are some places in Niles and Morton Grove to cool off:

  •  The Niles Family Fitness Center and the Senior Center (in the same building as the Fitness Center)  will be open as a cooling center for those who would like to come cool off. They're at the southeast corner of Waukegan Road and Oakton Street, Niles. The Fitness Center is open 5:30 a.m.-10:00 p.m. Thursday, and 5:30 a.m. to  9:00 p.m. Friday. The Senior Center is open 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. If you require a cooling center after hours, please call (847) 588-6500. In an emergency call 911.
  • The Niles Library at Waukegan Road and Oakton Street is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday.
  • Oasis Fun Center Pool on Milwaukee Avenue is open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday.
  • Prairie View Community Center in Morton Grove on Dempster Street is open  Monday through 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. 
  • Harrer Pool on Dempster Street in Morton Grove is open.
