Planners Hopeful For Morton Grove Days Result

Attendance was slightly down because of the heat wave, but planners say they think the results, when tallied, will be OK.

Though the four-day Morton Grove Days festival got socked with very high temperatures--with a high of 102 degrees on July Fourth, its biggest day--planners say they think it will show respectable financial results.

"Our numbers are down, but not that far down," said Mark Manno, one of the organizers. "But I think people enjoyed themselves even though it was hot."

Georgianne Brunner, who's in charge of volunteers for the event, said, "I'll make an observation. Attendance seemed a little low, probably related to the heat. And (on July 4th), the beer garden closed at 9:45 p.m., instead of 11 p.m. (as in previous years), so that would lower numbers.

"But it was a great success, we were really pleased with all the people that showed up in the heat."

The Morton Grove Days Commission, made up entirely of volunteers, expects to have financial results in hand when it meets next week.

Manno, who is restaurant chairman and business expo chair and works with rentals, said the Morton Grove Days Commission has its own bank account, separate from the village.

"We're trying to become a standalone commission, with support from the village and community," he said.

Other key volunteers on the commission include:

  • Billy Archer, who manages the entertainment.
  • Trustee Bill Grear, who is raffle chair and the liaison to the village and police and fire departments.
  • Teresa Cousar, who runs the parade.
  • Paul Minx, who organizes the beer garden.
  • Paul Tobin, who takes care of operations, including electricity, water and lighting.
  • Jim Karp, the treasurer.
