- The Village of Niles has an "Informal Considerations" meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, and a regular meeting at 7 p.m.
- Come to a grand opening for Niles West High School's new astronomical observatory Wednesday at 6 p.m. Dress for the weather.
- The Fairy Tale Trail always does a great job creating non-scary Halloween magic for kids that definitely captures the imagination. It's designed for all kids, including special needs children. Friday, 4 p.m., 1702 Chicago Avenue, Evanston.
- Ready for a riveting play that touches on hot-button social issues? "Defamation" is presented at Oakton Community College at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
- Famous Chicago mystery novelist Sara Paretsky appears at Barnes & Noble Wednesday evening for a book signing of her latest, "Critical Mass." 7 p.m. at the Old Orchard location.
