St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Preschool

There are actually two preschools at St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran; one is a Japanese language immersion program, and most students are children of parents who have been transferred here from Japan by their corporate employers. The other is a regular English-language, Lutheran-church-sponsored preschool for American children. Both preschools are housed in a separate buildings from the church, with a separate fenced yard area for play. Parents can park nearby for drop-off and pick-up, but the parking lot is a safe distance from the play area. Jenny Powell directs the English-language preschool, and Minori Yamaki directs the Japanese-language preschool. The preschool is open to all. Students do not have to be Lutheran, said Powell, who stressed the school has students from many diverse backgrounds. The Web site for the Japanese-language preschool is seimataiyouchien.com. The church, which was founded at the turn of the 20th century, has had an elementary school in this building for most of its history, but closed it in 2004. The building is now used only for preschool, which was added in the early 1980s.
