Suspected Bomb Found; Woman Tries Bogus Rx

A man found a bag with electrical tape sticking out of it and the bomb squad responded. An arrest is merely an accusation and does not indicate a conviction.

  Niles Police responded to a call from someone who found three bags in a parking lot in the 8800 block of Dempster on May 11 just before midnight. At least one bag had electrical tape sticking out of the zipper, which prompted police to call the Cook County Bomb Squad. The bomb squad arrived at 1:25 a.m. on May 13 and determined the bags did not pose a threat. They contained the belongings of a woman in her 60s from Vernon Hills. D207 Freshmen Outperform Older Students

Ninth-graders at Maine East, South were tested when they arrived in September, and have higher scores than the district's sophomores, juniors and seniors.

    Freshmen in Maine Township High School District 207 did better, on average, than previous classes on the ACT’s Explore test. The Explore test is generally given as the first is a series of tests culminating with the ACT college entrance exam. All Illinois public high school juniors take the ACT as part of the Prairie State Achievement Exam. The scores, which were presented in a report at a recent school board meeting, showed that the composite Explore score for District 207’s class of 2015 was 17. That's 0.4 points above the average of the composite scores of the last three years, according to the report from Barbara Dill-Varga, the assistant superintendent for curriculum. Leaning Tower Announces Triathlon Results

The youth triathlon took place Saturday, and the adult event on Sunday. Unlike last year, there was sunny weather.

  The Leaning Tower YMCA's Tower Triathlon took place Sunday, with athletes competing in running, swimming and biking segments. Park District To Honor Director's 15 Years

The Niles Park District board is honoring Joe LoVerde on his 15th anniversary with the district.

  Last Tuesday, the illness of three Niles Park District commissioners caused the district to cancel its board meeting. They'll regroup Wednesday evening for the meeting, and plan to honor Joe LoVerde, executive director, on his 15th anniversary with the district, said Ray Czarnik, a commissioner. Czarnik has written a speech marking the event, which includes, "Joe, with your vast knowledge and experience in planning and construction you have allowed this district to grow to levels faster than any one of us could have imagined. You personally dedicate yourself to every project that we take on." GBS Pitcher Wins Patch's Athlete of the Week

The nominee eked out a victory and was named Athlete of the Week.

With 5 votes in the comments section, Glenbrook South's Sully Stadler was named the Athlete of the Week.  Stadler got the win for Glenbrook South in a 3-0 victory over Maine South. Stadler had eight strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings pitched and the victory over their CSL South rivals snapped Maine South’s 18-game winning streak. HONORABLE MENTION Reggie Murphy, freshman, track and field, Evanston - Murphy was a key contributor in helping the Wildkits win the CSL South conference track meet for the second consecutive season. Poll: Should Chicago Have a Casino?

Illinois lawmakers are again looking to expand gambling options in Illinois.

  Illinois lawmakers are considering plans to add more casinos as the state continues to grapple with budget woes. The latest proposals would place casinos in Danville, Rockford and Waukegan. Another proposal would allow for slot machines to be operated at race tracks like Arlington Park, the Alton Daily News reported. The bills are sponsored by Terry Link (D-Waukegan) in the Senate and Lou Lang (D-Skokie) in the House. Gov. Pat Quinn has called the legislation to, once again, expand gambling in Illinois "a distraction." Meanwhile, behind the scenes, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has been pushing for a Chicago casino.
