A 24-year-old Itasca man reported that he parked his 1997 Honda sedan in the parking lot of an outlot restaurant in the 9100 block of Golf Road on May 16 around 11 p.m., and when he came out, it was gone. The victim said his vehicle is paid for, he had the only key, and he had no idea who might have taken it. Police entered it into a state theft database. Charges have been filed against an Evanston teen for a shooting that occurred outside Old Orchard Mall in Skokie on May 17.
Criminal charges have been filed against Rayshawn Taylor, 17 , of the 1900 block of Jackson Avenue in Evanston, in connection with a shooting that took place outside Old Orchard Mall near the intersection of Golf Road and Skokie Boulevard. Taylor is charged with one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm and one count of unlawful use of a weapon. Taylor shot a juvenile with a semiautomatic pistol on May 17 around 9:45 p.m., police said. When officers arrived at the scene, they observed a male subject lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. He is currently in stable condition. Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart’s Office will be providing free child identification kits this week allowing parents to store critical identifying information about their children that would assist law enforcement if the child goes missing. The Sheriff is participating in a national campaign commemorating National Missing Children’s Day (Saturday, May 25), culminating with the ID kit giveaway. The kits contain supplies to collect DNA and fingerprint samples at home and include space to keep recent photographs. The ability to provide such items to law enforcement during the initial stages of a missing child investigation plays a critical role in expediting the search. A manager at a grocery store in the 5700 block of Touhy (Pointe Plaza) reported May 10 that a man had entered the store on May 5 at about 9 p.m., gone to the rice aisle and began to cut open several bags of rice with a box cutter or similar tool. She did not know why he did it. The man came into the store again on May 10 and purchased several food items. The manager agreed that if and when he returned, she would contact police and a member of the store's management would tell the man he is no longer welcome in the store. A man whose car had red and blue flashing lights pulled over a student driving to Maine East High School Monday and searched her car before releasing her, police said. Several Maine Township police chiefs oppose legalizing marijuana, the Chicago Tribune reports. The Illinois House and Senate recently voted to legalize the substance, which is currently awaiting a decision by Governor Pat Quinn. But the police chiefs in Niles, Park Ridge and Des Plaines say they are against the proposal, as stated in a letter to residents of their communities last week, the newspaper reports. William Kushner (Des Plaines), Dean Strzelecki (Niles) and Frank Kaminski (Park Ridge) say legalizing the drug would make it more difficult to stop people from driving under the influence.

A 26-year-old Niles woman reported May 11 that her wallet was stolen from her purse, and someone forged and cashed one of her checks for $3,500 and made a $350 purchase with her credit card, according to the report. She did not know the location where the wallet was stolen.
