Ninth-graders at Maine East, South were tested when they arrived in September, and have higher scores than the district's sophomores, juniors and seniors.
Freshmen in Maine Township High School District 207 did better, on average, than previous classes on the ACT’s Explore test. The Explore test is generally given as the first is a series of tests culminating with the ACT college entrance exam. All Illinois public high school juniors take the ACT as part of the Prairie State Achievement Exam. The scores, which were presented in a report at a recent school board meeting, showed that the composite Explore score for District 207’s class of 2015 was 17. That's 0.4 points above the average of the composite scores of the last three years, according to the report from Barbara Dill-Varga, the assistant superintendent for curriculum. Niles West is hoping to set world record for number of twins in one class. Double the fun?
Niles West High School sophomores looked around earlier this year and thought they were seeing double, because there are more twins than usual in the class. It was actually one of the twins who brought the unusual number of sibling pairs to the attention of the school, said Jessica Ogulnik, the director of student activities, and suggested that the school might find its way into the Guinness Book of World Records. Earlier: Niles West sets sustainable standards So Ogulnik combed enrollment documents to see how many twins are in the class of 2014 at the school, and came up with 14 pairs. Some are identical – coming from a single embryo that divided and thus sharing their full genetic code -- but most appear to be fraternal, she said, …

The winners of the Rube Goldberg contest for school kids demonstrated their work Monday at the lab.
Sometimes you can’t just take the easy way out—but the team of Maine South High School students who won this year’s Argonne National Laboratory Rube Goldberg machine contest found the more complicated route can also be more fun. The group of freshmen created a machine that through 20 intricate steps accomplished a simple task: popping a balloon. Argonne National Laboratory hosted the team Monday, along with the winners of the Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl, during a showcase in the lab’s cafeteria. Earlier: How Maine South students built their wacky machine Maine South’s team tried 15 different ways to pop the balloon before they settled on inflating it using negative energy (i.e., sucking the air out of a chamber with a …

Principal Jean LeBlanc announced the school will have several multi-age, combined-grade classrooms for the 2012-13 school year. Some parents were skeptical, but others were willing to try it. Melzer already is all multi-age.
Multiple opinions were prevalent last week when Nelson School parents heard about principal Jean LeBlanc’s new “multi-age” classroom program that combines second and third graders, and fifth and sixth graders, into the same class except for math. Parents offered pro and con stances, and some in the middle. But many seem ready to give LeBlanc and her staff a chance to make the program work. Endorsing the concept was Laura O’Donovan, with daughter Emma already in a multi-age class. Daughter Danielle, 11, will enter the multi-age fifth-sixth-grade class in August. Earlier: Dist. 63 worries about more financial uncertainty “Emma loves it. This is the first time this year I didn’t have to go to a parent-teacher conference the second half of the…

I don't blame the school (LeBlanc is doing what she can with the resources she was provided), but rather the ineffective school board for letting this become an issue. Instead of reigning in finances when they had the chance, they were giving out rich teacher contracts and making the entire district more administrative heavy. Now because of their rubber stamp oversight, we're stuck with …   more ›
As reported by Patch earlier, about 300 high school students don't take lunch, but take more classes instead. Now, board members are looking to require students take "four years of lunch" before graduating.
Students at Niles North and Niles West high schools could be required to take a scheduled lunch period if a proposed policy change in Niles Township High School District 219 moves forward. The proposal would mean that students could take a maximum of eight scheduled classes at a time, plus lunch. A few weeks ago, Patch reported that a number of high school students throughout the North Shore were skipping lunch so they can take more classes. Earlier this spring, the principals of Niles North and Niles West reported that more than 300 students don’t have a scheduled lunch period, at least not every day. Most simply want to take more classes, although some arrange their schedules to arrive late or leave early. Sign up for our newsletter …

Kudos John...nice job. This recognition absolutely must be satisfying in many ways. Quite frankly, I'm taken back however with even the suggestion that violence in inner city schools (south and west sides in other words) is "underreported." That's all you hear. That's all you read about. There are only so many prime time spots to report these actions. There is only so much journalistc space …   more ›
