Scott Jochim, the village's director of Public Works, says the department has employees who oversee forestry, streets, sewer and water.
The department gets calls ranging from "How do I get rid of a wasp's nest?" to "My roof is leaking, what should I do?" from new homeowners.
Public Works also operates the village's courtesy transportation service, known as the Niles Free Bus.
The department uses its 30-plus trucks year-round. In late summer and early fall, they are used for picking up branches; in November, the department converts its equipment so it can be used for snow removal. The trucks include street sweepers, trailers and vactors, which are pieces of equipment used to clean sewers.
