Gemini Junior High School is the only junior high in East Maine School District 63, and the district's six…More elementary (K-6) schools feed into it. Gemini only offers grades 7 and 8, and its students come from Niles, Morton Grove, Park Ridge, Glenview and Des Plaines.
"It's a wonderful climate, a wonderful opportunity for the kids," said Dr. Scott Hermann, principal.
Student council is very active in raising money for causes such as the American Heart Association and the American Lung Association, and any student can be on student council. They don't have to be elected from their homerooms.
The school was built in 1960 and has had additions in 1962, 1965 and 2002. The interior is freshly painted, and the wide hallways have carpeting.
Gemini received the Academic Improvement Award from the Illinois State Board of Education twice, in 2006 and 2007. It also received the Illinois Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance award for PE for a three year period, 2004-2007, and the same association's award for Health for the three-year period 2008-2011.
The gym has a climbing wall and a high ropes course. The school offers adventure education, which includes team building, and kinetic wellness.
Students contribute to the Mustang Mirror, an online publication of their artwork, writing, and other expressions. Students also put on one-act plays, and perform concerts. The school choir entertains at a nursing home.
