Park Ridge-Niles School District 64 has issued a warning to parents after a man in a black sedan approached an 11-year-old girl and tried to convince her to get in the car. The statement from District 64 reads: At approximately 3:50 p.m., an 11 year old female student was approached in the 800 S. block of Western as she walked home from school. An unknown male in a Black Sedan (No further description for the driver or the vehicle) called out to the girl as he came alongside her. The driver stated that the girl’s mother wanted him to drive her home. The girl ran home and the Police Department was contacted immediately. Police units checked the area and were unable to locate a black sedan with a lone male driver. Park Ridge Police Officers…

Results are available here as they unfold. Meanwhile, watch videos of many of the athletes competing at the meet from the immediate area as they took part in either the Niles West or Buffalo Grove Sectional meets May 16.

Skokie Teen Charged in Shooting Near Old Orchard Mall Criminal charges have been filed against Rayshawn Taylor, 17 , of the 1900 block of Jackson Avenue in Evanston, in connection with a shooting that took place outside Old Orchard Mall near the intersection of Golf Road and Skokie Boulevard. Taylor is charged with one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm and one count of unlawful use of a weapon. Taylor shot a juvenile with a semiautomatic pistol on May 17 around 9:45 p.m., police said. When officers arrived at the scene, they observed a male subject lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. He is currently in stable condition. Danny Pudi may have graduated from Niles' Notre Dame College Prep in 1997, but he's still attending Greendale Community College in NBC's comedy series Community. He plays Abed, one of a group of tight-knit friends who study together, in the well-written comedy series about life at a fictional community college. On Saturday, Pudi will take a break from life in Los Angeles, where he lives, to speak to Notre Dame's Class of 2013 at their commencement. Our veterans are now facing a new enemy at home--long wait times for their disability claims. The waiting times started increasing in 2010 when U.S. troops were withdrawn from Iraq causing a dramatic uptick in first-time filers, according to the Center for Investigative Reporting. The data found that in most regional VA offices, not only did waiting times increase, but they vary dramatically with location: about a year and five months in Baltimore, Maryland compared to four months in Fargo, North Dakota. The national average now stands at about eleven months, which is dramatically higher than in 2009 when it was four months. Data for the Chicago VA Regional Office shows that as of May 13, 2013, veterans waited an average of 501 days (…

City of Joy is the only bookstore in town with Russian books and music, the Niles Herald-Advocate reports.
A Niles bookstore is catering to the village’s large Russian-American community, the Niles Herald-Advocate reports. City of Joy bookstore is the only one in town carrying a vast selection of both fiction and non-fiction books in the Russian language. The store also sells Russian films and CDs, but their most popular section is the children’s book area, the newspaper reports. The store, located at 8710 W. Golf Road, attracts mainly Russian-American customers, but also those that aren’t of Russian descent.
