Niles Hires Lawyer In Alleged Sex Assault Case
Trustee says board voted to hire attorney to handle a case of a police officer accused of sexual assault. An arbitrator ruled Niles must reinstate him with 21 months of back pay and benefits.
The Niles village board voted Wednesday to hire a law firm to handle potential litigation. Niles Trustee Andrew Przybylo said the firm, Laner Muchin will work on a case involving a Niles police officer, Fotis Markadas, who was accused of sexual assault in January 2010. The village of Niles, Markadas' employer, suspended him without pay after the incident. An arbitrator ruled in April that the village must reinstate Markadas and pay him 21 months of back pay and benefits. Niles Village Attorney Joe Annunzio said soon after the arbitrator's decision that the village would appeal the ruling.
