An explosion that left an entire building faceless was initially thought to be the cause of a gas leak. Yet after an extensive investigation, fire officials have concluded that the act was arson.
A blast that blew off the entire front portion of an apartment building last December was initially thought to be caused by a gas leak. Morton Grove firefighters responded to the explosion on the day it happened. However, an investigation released by the Skokie Fire Department earlier this month revealed that the blast was in fact arson. Now, the Skokie Police Department has charged Stefan Kogut, 53, of the 100 block of West Ridge Ave., with two counts of arson on Monday. It is alleged that Kogut intentionally set off the explosion that left the apartment building at 8734 Kimball Avenue, Skokie, faceless. After Morton Grove police charged a 16-year-old with possession of a stolen car Saturday, an investigation led to charges of arson and additional thefts, including a second stolen car, according to a statement from Morton Grove Police Commander Paul Yaras. During the investigation, police found property that belonged to other people along with items that related to ongoing fire investigations, according to the statement. The juvenile admitted during interviews that he was directly responsible for five fires in Morton Grove along with multiple burglaries to vehicles and two stolen cars, police said.
