Baseball Commissioner Stays In The Game

Tom Settepani, Niles Baseball League's commissioner, talks about the Home Run Derby, All Star game, and what it's been like to merge Morton Grove and Niles baseball.

A core of volunteers keep most youth sport programs going, and the Niles Baseball League is no exception. We sat down with Tom Settepani, this year's commissioner, to find out what' going on.  Patch: What's new with Niles Baseball? Tom Settepani: We have a Home Run Derby Saturday (June 23) at 3 p.m.for the younger ages. We set up fencing all around the infield. Depending on the age level, if they hit the ball over the fence, it’s a home run. Kids win a bat, we engrave it with the kid's name on it. So at each (age) level we’ll have a champion for the home run derby We also have an All Star Game, with two or three kids from each team.   Are you getting lots of kids wanting to play baseball?  The numbers are dwindling, except Park Ridge …

Hall of Famer Andre Dawson Mixes With Fans

Fans came from far and wide to greet one of the Cubs' all-time stars, whom they have loved since his 1987 Most Valuable Player season, at a book signing in the north suburbs.

“There’s nothing like Chicago fans,” baseball Hall of Famer Andre Dawson said with a heartfelt smile. “The luster of this evening – it will not diminish. It’s your evening. I’m not an author. I’m a retired baseball player.” At 6-foot-3-inches, Dawson, 57, stood ramrod tall and was still cut in a charcoal grey suit Wednesday, compared to the powerful upper body bulging out of his white-and-blue double-knit Cubs pinstriped uniform of a generation ago. He was buoyed walking in by the huge ovation from the overflow crowd in the special events section at The Book Stall in downtown Winnetka. Here was the umpteenth example of the fans’ love affair that hasn’t diminished 25 years after he won the National League’s Most Valuable Player award as a …

Baseball Striking Out With Morton Grove Kids?

The game might be financially booming in the majors. But at its roots, such as in the local program, there are problems in keeping the kids interested. The number of kids registering drops every year.

Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig may be promoting a “renaissance” in the sport, but that is not not happening with the 57-year-old Morton Grove Baseball and Softball Association. Yvette Karp, one of Morton Grove's most active volunteers, and her fellow baseball association board members are vexed by a stunning drop in player registration over the last four years that does not synch with any overall decrease in Morton Grove’s population. Earlier: Last Chance: register for Niles baseball “Where have the kids gone? I don’t know,” said Karp, association president for the last two years. She also assists her husband, Jim Karp, director of the Morton Grove Foundation, which has Taste of Morton Grove as its biggest annual fund-raiser. With …

Best Picture Nominee 'Moneyball''s Got Game

Brad Pitt makes baseball film work, whether your reaction to sports is 'yay' or 'yawn.'

While the excitement of Oscar Night dazzled movie fans Sunday, the good news is that we can still enjoy the nominated films for years to come. While I reviewed many before the celebrity-studded event Feb. 26, there's a few more gems to get to. This week, I’ve selected Moneyball…a film that was nominated for six Academy Awards this year (including Best Picture) and though it doesn't win any awards at the Oscars, it is still a great film.  It also is a film that I truly did not understand.  I would have seen it regardless of the subject (um, two words…Brad Pitt) and the fact that I did not understand it does not mean I didn’t like it. I did.  Moneyball is a strong film about baseball.  And math and statistics.  I like baseball.  I am not a …

This week's Patch Portrait Series also features Deerfield's recycling dog wonder.

This week's Patch Portrait Series also features Deerfield's recycling dog wonder. I ended up playing, I liked it, and I never stopped playing ever since,” explained the shortstop. Kids always dream big, but it was in high school that Warda came to realized he might have a real future in the sport. Check out archives of the entire Patch Portrait series.  “I think just after freshman year was when I started to realized I could play college ball.  My coach sat me down after freshman year and he just …
