Nominees for Athlete of the Week: Maine South's Jacqui Grant, New Trier's M.J. Pritchard, Evanston's Terrell Farmby, Deerfield's Christine Stitcher and Niles North's Karol Mlynarski
More than 48,000 ballots were received last week and North Shore Country Day's Austin Curren came out on top, winning Athlete of the Week. The nominees for North Shore Patch Athlete of the Week, Feb. 6 - Feb. 12: Christine Stitcher, junior, girls gymnastics, Deerfield – Stitcher qualified for the state meet for the second year in a row. The Deerfield junior recorded a 36.825 in the all-around and also qualified in floor and uneven bars at the Niles North Sectional. The state meet will be held next week at Palatine High School. M.J. Pritchard, junior, wrestling, New Trier – Pritchard qualified for the wrestling state championships by taking third place in the 113-pound division of the Class 3A Barrington Sectional. This week's nominees for Athlete of the Week: Evanston's Leonard Garron, Glenbrook South's Olivia Smoliga, Maine West's Jordan Pessah, Niles West's Molly Kleppin, and North Shore Country Day's Austin Curren.
More than 1,480 ballots were cast in last week's competition and Maine West's Brittany Collins was named the Patch Athlete of the Week. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 29 - Feb. 5: Austin Curren, junior, boys basketball, North Shore Country Day – Curren has had point totals of 25, 28 and 32 points in three conference wins for the Raiders. During that time he’s shot 67 percent from the field (29/43) and has turned the ball over only five times. Curren is also averaging 5.5 rebounds per game. Molly Kleppin, junior, girls basketball, Niles West - Kleppin led the Wolves with 15 points in a tough win against Maine South. More than 1,480 ballots were cast in last week's competition and Maine West's Brittany Collins is this week's Patch Athlete of the Week. Collins recorded four straight double-doubles for the Warriors last week. She scored at least 17 points and brought down at least 11 rebounds in games against Lake Zurich, Fenwick, Maine East and Johnsburg, helping Maine West win in two of those contests. The Maine West sophomore received 1,166 votes, or 78 percent. HONORABLE MENTION Jim McPike, senior, wrestling, Glenbrook North – McPike took the conference championship in the 170-pound division. More than 71,000 votes were cast in last week's contest and Niles West's Ryan Miller was voted Athlete of the Week. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 23 - Jan. 29: Jim McPike, senior, wrestling, Glenbrook North – McPike took the conference championship in the 170-pound division. The senior from Glenbrook North pinned New Trier’s Luke Hidder in the second period of the conference finals to claim the championship. The win moved McPike to 19-5 on the year. Dashae Shumate, sophomore, girls basketball, Niles West – Shumate made the game-winning layup for Niles West against Maine South last week. Her two points as time expired gave the Wolves a 42-41 win. More than 300 votes were cast last week and Glenbrook South's Molly McDonagh claimed the title of Athlete of the Week. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 16 - Jan. 22: Zach Cole, senior, boys bowling, Deerfield – Cole took third place at the sectional championships with a 1332 in his six-game series. The senior led Deerfield to a third-place team finish and qualified as an individual for the state championship. Sacks scored a game-high 19 points in the Warriors’ 67-52 non-conference victory over Wheeling. The senior had four points in the fourth quarter to lead Deerfield in a late-game comeback. The Deerfield basketball star received more than 7,500 votes, or about 48 percent. More than 1,500 votes were cast in last week's contest and Maine South's Nina Duric was proclaimed the winner. Duric led the Hawks’ balanced scoring attack with 14 points and nine rebounds in Maine South’s 55-43 win over Champaign Centennial to claim the State Farm Holiday Classic title. This marks the first time Maine South has won the championship in school history. The Maine South basketball star received more than 700 votes, or about 47 percent. Honorable Mention: Malachi Nix, junior, basketball guard, Niles North – Nix had 13 points in the first quarter and 23 for the game in Niles North’s 62-48 win over Vernon Hills in the Wheeling Hardwood Classic consolation game. Patch sports reporter Ross Jacobson ranks the North Shore’s basketball teams. Niles West, Loyola and Glenbrook North made waves at early holiday tournaments, but a number of girls teams struggled. All of the area’s boys teams were off, resting and preparing for a full slate of games between Christmas and New Years. New Trier and Glenbrook North will go to the always-tough Proviso West tournament while Glenbrook South and Highland Park will try out the first annual Hinsdale South tournament. For all teams, this is the last batch of non-conference games before the meat of their conference schedules get under way in 2012. Last week’s ranking is in parentheses. WEEK 6 RANKINGS 1.
